WSL kicked off their season with an away fixture against Reading Lions in the league. Historically a very high scoring ground, WSL came with a full strength squad with plenty of batting, bowling and on a high after a very strong performance the previous week.
The weather couldn’t make its mind up as it was raining one minute, sunny the next, which at times made play a little more challenging, but Waltham got off to a strong start batting, having lost the toss.
There were some particularly strong performances from Ankush Gandhi (138 from 98 balls) and Chris Sharpe (42) who solidified play for a good number of overs and set a great foundation to build from. The pick of the Reading Lions bowlers was Nirupan Boopathy with figures of 3-42. Shiva Aruna (1-26) and Vinoth Palanisamy (1-25) delivered fantastic economy rates on a batsmen-friendly wicket too.
At the break, WSL were feeling optimistic about the very challenging target they had set at nearly 6.5 an over required. And things got off to a reasonable start with two wickets falling in the first two overs, one off of Was (1-44) and the other from Andy (1-36). But then things started to slow and with Shiva Aruna (140) and Keerthi Prakash (58) at the crease, it was a long time before WSL managed to get their next breakthrough from the bowling of Sana (1-41).
As the overs went on, it was hard to tell which way it was going to go, with WSL having a couple of good overs and Reading Lions responding the same. Reading Lions kept themselves at the run rate and despite a late couple of wickets from Sree (1-26) and Siva (1-40) finally removing Shiva, with three balls to go, Reading Lions got to the target, winning by 5 wickets).
Whilst the result was not what WSL were looking for, to kick-start their season, it was an enjoyable opener, played in great spirit with the guys from Reading Lions. So much so, we have already scheduled in a mid-week T20 back at Oak Meadow on Thursday 13th May – we look forward to seeing you again then!
